Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about the International IPS AI Guidance Framework™ and the initiative supporting it.

The International IPS AI Guidance Framework is an independent initiative designed to support responsible adoption, implementation, and governance of Artificial Intelligence within Integrated Product Support environments.

It provides a structured set of principles, concepts, and discussions intended to help organisations explore how AI capabilities may interact with engineering processes, lifecycle data environments, and programme governance structures.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly influencing many engineering and operational environments. However, its application within Integrated Product Support raises important questions around governance, trust, verification, and lifecycle management.

This initiative was created to encourage practical discussion and collaboration on these topics.

No. The initiative does not replace or compete with existing specifications such as S1000D, S2000M, S3000L, or other lifecycle engineering frameworks.

The guidance instead explores how Artificial Intelligence may interact with these environments and what governance considerations organisations should consider.

The IPS-AI Guidance Framework is intentionally independent from any specific specification or standards body.

The S-Series specifications provide important methods and structures for managing support data, technical information, provisioning, and support analysis across the lifecycle of complex systems. These specifications can play a valuable role in enabling structured data environments that may support Artificial Intelligence capabilities.

However, the responsible adoption of AI within Integrated Product Support extends beyond the scope of any single specification. It involves wider considerations including governance, data strategy, verification, organisational accountability, operational trust, and lifecycle oversight.

The purpose of this initiative is therefore to remain specification-neutral. The framework is intended to support discussion about how Artificial Intelligence may be responsibly introduced within IPS environments regardless of which specifications, standards, or engineering frameworks an organisation chooses to adopt.

In many cases, organisations may use S-Series specifications as part of their support data strategy. In others, different engineering environments or data approaches may be used.

The framework therefore focuses on the broader strategic and governance questions surrounding AI adoption, rather than prescribing the use of any particular specification.

No. The IPS-AI Guidance Framework is not a formal standard.

It is a guidance initiative intended to encourage discussion, exploration, and collaboration across the Integrated Product Support community.

The initiative is developed and maintained by Technical Documentation World (TDW).

The aim is to support open discussion and collaboration while maintaining clear stewardship of the framework.

No. Organisations may choose to reference or align with the framework if they find it useful.

It is intended to support thinking and discussion rather than impose mandatory requirements.

There is currently no formal certification associated with the framework.

Organisations may choose to align their thinking with the principles described within the initiative.

Structured training related to the framework may be delivered by Tech Data World and recognised training partners.
